Kilim Rugs

What is a Kilim?

The word kilim indicated the woolen weaved carpet. While the knotted carpet is endowed as a velvet, the kilim is short and the technique is closed to the one used for the tapestry. The design visible on the kilim is made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flatweave. Even if kilim is not made of velvet, they are very strong due to this technique. Mainly the weavings are made by nomadic people or rural people for their own purpose (floor or wall). They used rough material at their disposal, mostly wool, but sometimes cotton for the warps or to accentuate a pattern. They do not use any model, interpreting the traditional pattern from their region or tribe of origin. This allows us to determine the area of provenance. They are a lot of different patterns. King Rug and Curtain, offer either kilim from Afghanistan or other part of middle east and each region provide a wide range of designs. They are mostly three different periods of production: Collector’s kilims were weaved before the advent of chemical dyes. The wool where colored by vegetable dyes and are generally 90 to 150 years old. The antique kilims were always weaved for domestic purpose but vegetable dyes where replaced by chemical dyes and they are generally 30 to 80 years old. Contemporary kilim are always weaved by people in their village.
